Rose Hartwell

Rose Hartwell is a well-respected Elder from the Elnu Abenaki Tribe. She has been researching Eastern Native decorative art for more than 25 years.  She does porcupine quillwork, finger weaving, twined and makes Traditional Eastern style clothing and regalia items.

Rose has been doing educational programs at museums, historic sites and schools all over New England for more than 20 years.

Artist Statement

Since 1988 I have researched and produced articles of quillwork, moose hair, and beadwork pertaining to items by various native nations from pre-contact on. In addition, I finger-weave, twine and make clothing.

During the summers I attend various living history programs and French and Indian  War re-enactments.  I have had the pleasure of making some articles for museums.  But my greatest satisfaction comes from the school programs and talking to the visitors at the events about the native culture and the items they used.

Please enjoy Rose’s artwork, as she is no longer able to create her decorative art.
