SUMMARY:Parley & Protocol\, War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Parley & Protocol\, War and Peace \nIn 2026\, communities around the United States celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War and the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, which spoke stirringly of human equality yet referred to Native Americans as “merciless Indian savages.” By that time of the American Revolution\, Abenaki and other Indigenous peoples of the region had survived seventeen decades of alternating war and peace\, dislocations and negotiations. \nThis exhibition\, by the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association\, brings together historical documents\, maps\, and art with work by present-day American Abenaki artists\, sharing Indigenous perspectives on the founding of the United States. This project is supported in part by a grant from Vermont Humanities\, in partnership with the Vermont 250th Commission.

DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to join us on Saturday\, August 29th\, for the Nulhegan Tribal Gathering. There will be singing\, storytelling\, drumming\, and dancing along with other activities to be enjoyed by adults and  children. Shop at our Abenaki vendors’ booths. Guests are invited to join us for lunch.  Donations will be accepted. \n \nVisit website for more information. \n \nThis is a drug and alcohol-free event. There is no entry fee. No weapons permitted on the grounds.

SUMMARY:Capturing Indigenous History Through 3-D Scanning
DESCRIPTION:The Ethan Allen Homestead Museum presents our Free Monthly Lecture: “Capturing Indigenous History Through 3D Scanning” by Don Stevens\, Director of the Nulhegan Cultural and Historic Preservation Department.\n\n\nThis event is in-person in the museum’s tavern. Free for all to attend. Complimentary refreshments provided. The program will be recorded by CCTV and later available on the museum’s YouTube channel (@EthanAllenHomestead).\nThis event is part of Vermont Archaeology Month\, sponsored by the Vermont Archaeological Heritage Center.\n\n\nABOUT THIS MONTH’S LECTURE:The Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation\, located here in Vermont\, received a cultural preservation grant to record historical artifacts important to their tribe and to share the artifacts with the public\, educators\, and researchers. Numerous artifacts have been scanned from private collections\, museum collections\, and state archives. Artifacts scanned include items from active Revolutionary War sites in Vermont\, including Crown Point and Otter Creek.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER:Don Stevens is Chief of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation and President of Abenaki Helping Abenaki\, a nonprofit that preserves Abenaki culture\, community awareness\, & charitable endeavors. Don is an accomplished Vermont leader\, businessman\, and lecturer. Don has served on many boards and commissions\, including the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs and the Attorney General Board of Racial Disparities. He helped led the fight to obtain recognition\, language revitalization\, land acquisitions\, and federal agreements for the Abenaki People. Additionally\, he has 30 years of experience in Information Technology and Project Management. Don is a US Military Veteran\, a graduate from Champlain College\, and holds Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Middlebury College\, Champlain College\, and Sterling College.

DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Alliance for the Social Studies is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our 32nd annual conference on November 18th at Capitol Plaza Hotel Montpelier and Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier\, VT. \nInteractive session presented by Vera Longtoe Sheehan:\nVermont’s 250th: Public History\, Inquiry\, and Native Voices:\nUsing the “American Abenaki Curriculum” and the exhibition “Parley & Protocol: War\nand Peace” we examine Indigenous voices that shape our understanding of Vermont’s\npast and the way uplifting multiple perspectives can prepare students to become\ninformed citizens. Rather than presenting history as a collection of memorized facts\,\neducators can engage students with compelling questions\, examining evidence\,\ndiscussing multiple perspectives\, and taking informed action to empower students to\nbecome thoughtfully informed\, empathetic\, civically engaged citizens. This interactive\nsession provides a framework to present a fuller story of Vermont at 250 by including\nIndigenous voices and extending learning beyond the classroom.
