Broadcast media\, health\, and government officials repeated the daily mantra “Flatten the Curve.” Resources became scarce\, exposing health disparities and access issues that Native American families face across North America. Here in N’Dakinna (our homeland) Abenaki families turned to traditional medicines and other cultural practices for comfort and survival\, connecting with nature and small family groups.\n\nThroughout the dark times that followed\, Abenaki and other Native American artists\, musicians\, and community members expressed the impact of the pandemic on ourselves and our community through storytelling\, visual arts\, and writing. Our stories of personal experience and perceptions about the disparities\, access issues\, and historical traumas that contribute to vaccine hesitation are also stories of recovery\, survival\, and resilience.\n\nThe stories and artwork in this exhibit were gathered by the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association through the Abenaki Storytelling Project to create an auto-history of the Native American community in Vermont and the surrounding environs.\n\nMany of the storytellers\, artists\, and community members who contributed to this body of work found that sharing helped them process their grief. This exhibition goes beyond Beyond the Curve: the Abenaki COVID Experience differences to speak of experiences that are universal. SUMMARY:Nulhegan Abenaki Gathering
DESCRIPTION:  \nNulhegan Abenaki Gathering Returns to Mount Norris!\n\nOur 2023 Nulhegan Abenaki Gathering will once again be held at Mount Norris Scout Reservation in Eden\, VT.  With its huge dining hall\, this is the perfect venue for the Gathering\, since it will take place rain or shine! \nThe Gathering will take place on August 26th & 27th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. It will open for Nulhegan Citizens only on August 25th\,  commencing at 10:00 am. \nThroughout the weekend there will singing\, storytelling\, drumming\, and dancing along with other activities to be enjoyed by adults and children. For example\, last year people had the opportunity to learn how to pound ash. There was also a lesson given on making a bustle for regalia. \nVendors of authentic native crafts will be set up throughout the weekend.  Please note that you should bring cash\, because many of the vendors have no way to process credit card payments. Though we won’t know who all of our vendors will be until that weekend\, you may find all sorts of great hand-made and hand-crafted items at the Gathering. Many of our citizens are great artists and you may find items such as hand-woven baskets\, drums\, rattles\, jewelry\, bags\, pouches\, paintings\, professional photographic prints\, children’s books\, and much more. Last year\, we even had one of our youngest citizens selling some marvelous customized tea blends! \nPlease note that this is never a powwow – it is a Gathering of friends and family for the Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe. Wearing regalia is optional. The public is always welcome to participate in all of the activities\, as well as the meal\, and is invited to attend both Saturday and Sunday. \nVisit the Nulhegan website for more information.

The multi-year project is in collaboration with the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association.\nJoe Bruchac’s appearances are as follows:\n\n1pm\, at the Middletown Springs Public Library;\n3:30pm at the Mettawee Community School;\nand the grand finale at 7pm at Stone Valley Arts.\n\nThe events are free\, but donations are welcome at each venue to support the work of each organization.\nBruchac is the author of more than 120 books for adults and children. In his work\, Bruchac explores his Abenaki ancestry and Native American storytelling traditions. His honors and awards include fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts\, as well as a Cherokee Nation Prose Award\, a Knickerbocker Award\, a Hope S. Dean Award for Notable Achievement in Children’s Literature\, and both Writer of the Year and Storyteller of the Year awards from the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas. DESCRIPTION:Stone Valley Arts announces watercolor workshops Painting Inspired by Nature by Abenaki artist and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park artist-in-residence\, Amy Hook-Therrien on Saturday\, July 29th. The activities are part of the Celebrating Abenaki Art\, Heritage\, and Culture project at SVA.\nThe day will feature two workshops: 10am for grades 7 -12 for a forty-five-minute session followed by a two-hour event for adults at 11am. Advanced high school students in the first session will be able to stay through to the later workshop. The workshop is free\, but donations are requested to support SVA and future outreach events.\n\nThe location for Painting Inspired by Nature celebrates the first collaboration between SVA and Slate Valley Trails\, as the workshops will take place at the main Fairgrounds system trailhead parking area at 131 Town Farm Rd\, Poultney\, VT 05764. Some supplies will be available\, but if you have your own drawing pads\, something firm to support the pads\, brushes\, lawnchairs\, etc.\, please do bring them. Amy says\, “I love to paint natural things\, birches\, dead beech leaves\, waterfalls\, plants\, stones . . . it allows me to be freer in my painting style; nothing ever looks exactly the same in nature. DESCRIPTION:Nebizun: Water is Life \nNebizun (alternately spelled Nebizon) is the Abenaki word for medicine and the root word Nebi is the Abenaki word for water. The rivers and tributaries of N’Dakinna (our homeland) were our highways for traveling and the water itself is important to the species of fish and other wildlife that is necessary to our way of life. As stewards of the environment Native American people know the importance of having clean water. The Abenaki people know and understand the importance of water in everyday activities related to foodways and healing powers of water. Nebizun: Water is Life draws its inspiration from Native American Grandmothers who have been doing water walks to pray for the water\, and the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

DESCRIPTION:Beyond The Curve Exhibit will be showing In-Person from June 17th 2023 – October 15th 2023\nat the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum\, Vergennes\, VT\n\nCuratorial statement:\n“In March 2020\, the world stood still as businesses and schools around the world closed in response to the global pandemic. Broadcast media\, health\, and government officials repeated the daily mantra “Flatten the Curve.” Resources became scarce\, exposing health disparities and access issues that Native American families face across North America. Here in N’Dakinna (our homeland) Abenaki families turned to traditional medicines and other cultural practices for comfort and survival\, connecting with nature and small family groups.\n\nThroughout the dark times that followed\, Abenaki and other Native American artists\, musicians\, and community members expressed the impact of the pandemic on ourselves and our community through storytelling\, visual arts\, and writing. Our stories of personal experience and perceptions about the disparities\, access issues\, and historical traumas that contribute to vaccine hesitation are also stories of recovery\, survival\, and resilience.\n\nThe stories and artwork in this exhibit were gathered by the Vermont Abenaki Artists Association through the Abenaki Storytelling Project to create an auto-history of the Native American community in Vermont and the surrounding environs.\n\nMany of the storytellers\, artists\, and community members who contributed to this body of work found that sharing helped them process their grief. This exhibition goes beyond Beyond the Curve: the Abenaki COVID Experience differences to speak of experiences that are universal. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by artist & educator Vera Longtoe Sheehan\nUnderstanding Place: Wabanaki Textiles and Fiber Art provides the audience the opportunity to examine samples of twined weaving and learn how it connects to the land and Abenaki history. SUMMARY:Nebizun: Water is Life - Art Exhibit at Bennington Museum
DESCRIPTION:Nebizun: Water is Life \nNebizun (alternately spelled Nebizon) is the Abenaki word for medicine and the root word Nebi is the Abenaki word for water. The rivers and tributaries of N’Dakinna (our homeland) were our highways for traveling and the water itself is important to the species of fish and other wildlife that is necessary to our way of life. As stewards of the environment Native American people know the importance of having clean water. The Abenaki people know and understand the importance of water in everyday activities related to foodways and healing powers of water. Nebizun: Water is Life draws its inspiration from Native American Grandmothers who have been doing water walks to pray for the water\, and the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

Gather around the fire circle to learn how the Abenaki gathered and used Maple Syrup historically and also learn how this wonderful gift from nature was given to the first people of Vermont. \nNo registration necessary for this event. DESCRIPTION:In honor of World Water Day\, a panel of Indigenous citizens and environmental scientists share multiple perspectives on living in relationship with the Connecticut River watershed. \nThe term “Two-Eyed seeing\,” coined by Mi’kmaw Nation Elder Albert Marshall\, describes the experience of seeing the strength of Indigenous knowledge with one eye and the strength of Western knowledge with the other. Series speakers will share perspectives on community relationships to regional waterways\, including archaeology\, ecology\, advocacy\, Western and Indigenous science\, and more. Admission is free\, and donations are welcome.
