High School Summer Institute

Reimagining New England Histories

The Reimagining New England Histories High School Summer Institute is a two-week enrichment program for students who are juniors or seniors in high school and who are Native American/African/African American/Afro-Indigenous.

During the two-week institute, students will work collaboratively as they engage in a series of talks and roundtables, museum and community center visits, strategy sessions on the meanings and purpose of “Just Futures.” The institute will focus on resistance, healing, and community building as well as sovereignty, freedom and spirituality. Specific topics will include: communities’ longstanding relationships with land and water, resistance to human trafficking and enslavement, Native American, African, Afro-Indigenous, and African American communities, social justice & resistance, historical and intergenerational trauma & healing, contemporary issues of justice and equity, water and land protections, community development, solidarities, and autonomy.

This program is organized by the Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice at Brown University, the Tomaquag Museum, Williams College, Mystic Seaport Museum and the Williams-Mystic Program. This program is offered free of cost.  Housing, meals, excursions, and travel to and from Brown University will be covered.

The Reimagining New England Histories High School Summer Institute will be held on Brown’s campus July 10 – 22, 2022. 

To apply we ask students to fill out the online form below. Answers to the brief questions on the form may be done via short written responses, video, or other creative form. 

Applications are to be completed no later than February 24, 2022. Selected students will receive an email of their acceptance no later than April 4, 2022.
