ARTIST CORNER SALE
“W’Abenaki Stylez” Works of Art by Takara Matthews
IAIS is proud to highlight the artistry of Takara Matthews during the months of April and May. Takara, a member of the Abenaki Sokoki tribe is a Champion Women’s Fancy Dancer and Jingle Dress Dancer.
Born in Naugatuck Connecticut, she has been raised in her Native Indigenous of Abenaki, Lumbee and Muskogee heritage. Takara has toured the New England area with the W’Abenaki Dance Troop to help educate and promote Abenaki culture. She has danced women’s fancy shawl since the age of four and now dances the jingle dress. Her fancy shawl and jingle dress will be on display in our “From East to West” exhibit.
Her artistry focuses on beadwork, appliqué and making regalia. For sale will be a variety of beaded purses, medallions, earrings and jewelry. Takara also proudly serves her country as Airman 1st Class in the Vermont Air National Guard. She and her family reside in Vermont.
Artist Corner and Sale opens in our Museum Gift Shop on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 and runs through May 31, 2014.
