Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum is a 23-year-old institution which – through exhibits and programs focusing on Native American Indian experience, art, and history -- aims to improve our world through cultural and environmental awareness. We have a Main Gallery which displays Native American art by geographical region, a Contemporary Art Gallery for local Native artists and curators, and an outdoor gallery in which we identify and propagate plants and trees on which much of Native American culture is based. This year’s goals include bringing a Native voice to everything we do, through new museum tours, updated exhibits, and innovative programming.
The Contact of Cultures exhibit, reflects the maritime skillsand traditionas of the regions first people and the pivital expedition of Samuel de Champlain in 1609. Lake Champlain's first navigators are represented by a dugout canoe, full sized and miniature birchbark canoes, and some of the tools used to make them, an array of canoe paddles, as well as traditional fishing net, hooks and sinkers. Then meet Samuel de Champlain, whose explorations and personal diplomacy helped shape the world of today. Discover the skilled and tenacious man behind the myth, and some of the region's Native American people revealed in Champlain's writings and drawings.
